The pharmaceutical supply chain is subject to strict requirements
It is obvious that compliance with storage and shipping specifications is essential in the medical and pharmaceutical sector. In pharmaceutical wholesale, special attention must be given to product safety during order picking and when transporting sample material to laboratories or delivering medicines to patients. The supply of medicinal products is not only subject to the Medicinal Products Act, but also to special regulations during transport as defined in the EU Guidelines on Good Distribution Practice (GDP). The Medicinal Products Act regulates the proper and safe supply of medicinal products for human and animal use. The Guidelines on Good Distribution Practice (GDP) is a compilation of all quality assurance requirements and measures to ensure that the quality of medicinal products is maintained throughout all stages of the supply chain. Although the GDP guidelines are primarily addressing pharmaceutical wholesalers, the implementation of all measures should nevertheless be carried out by all participants in the supply chain. This is why shipping companies and warehouses, for example, must also provide effective means to ensure that medicinal products are stored, transported and handled under suitable conditions. The GDP guidelines set out the rules for quality management, personnel responsibilities, operational requirements, premises, equipment and proper documentation; they define systematic actions in the case of product returns, suspected drug counterfeiting, contract activities, self-inspection, and finally, they also specify the rules for intermediaries and transportation of pharmaceuticals.
